Calvin Lesko was born in Albany, New York and currently lives in Manhattan. As a composer for video games and other screen media, he specializes in writing highly thematic instrumental music for sci-fi and fantasy stories. His early musical training as a pianist centered around classical music and Chopin's works in particular, whose intimate, chromatic melodies inspired him to study music theory in college, where he worked as an undergraduate researcher under Chopin scholar David Kasunic.
An avid gamer throughout his life, Calvin has always been drawn to stories that paint the human condition through the lens of mythology. Having studied Japanese in high school, culminating in a year as an exchange student in Kiryu city, he feels a particular resonance with the concepts of ukiyo and mono no aware, which he studied further in a course on Heian-era literature taught by Motoko Ezaki. He later read the Hindu Bhagavad Gita, whose similar focus on the ephemerality of things reminded him of and rekindled his interest in the Greek Orthodox Christian teachings he grew up with while living in Binghamton, New York.
Calvin's approach to composing music is based in mindfulness of the immense variety and span of human histories and cultures. He enjoys the challenge of learning a broad range of styles and applying them to visuals in the most effective ways possible. To him, a major part of composing for media is being attuned to the sonic culture of the intended audience, and he considers that to be a constant focal point in his recent work. During his studies at Occidental College (B.A.) and NYU (M.M.), he studied composition with Andre Myers, Jennifer Logan, Nancy Van de Vate, Adam Schoenberg, Ira Newborn, and Eric Hachikian.
